Teofimo Lopez has officially announced his intention to retain his WBO 140-lb title and eyes Devin Haney as his first defense. Beating the World Boxing Organization's deadline, Lopez conveyed his decision to stay in the light welterweight division, despite speculation that he might vacate the title.

If Lopez had chosen to vacate, the title would have been contested between the WBO’s top contenders Arnold Barboza Jr and Jose Ramirez. However, Lopez recognizes the lucrative opportunity that comes with defending his title against Haney, who is a popular yet considered beatable opponent.

The main challenge now falls on Lopez’s promoters at Top Rank who need to negotiate a deal with Haney. Known for his undisputed lightweight champion status, Haney might demand a high price, especially after his recent controversial win against Vasily Lomachenko. It is crucial, however, for Haney not to become overly ambitious and remember that he does not hold a title at 140 and will have to meet Lopez’s terms as the reigning champion.

The entry of Haney into the 140-lb division seems to have reignited Lopez’s competitive spirit, inspiring him to hold on to his title. Having earned his title by defeating former undisputed light welterweight champion Josh Taylor, Lopez is not ready to give it up without a fight.
