Hamzah Sheeraz will now challenge WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames on February 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Previously, the 25-year-old Sheeraz had been ordered by the WBO to face IBF and WBO champion Janibek Alimkhanuly, but instead, Sheeraz opted to face Adames, viewed as the “easier” route among the champions. Social media erupted with criticism, accusing Sheeraz of ducking tougher competition, particularly Janibek and WBA champion Erislandy Lara.
Adames, who is considered the third-best middleweight champion, presents a less daunting challenge compared to Janibek. Fans in socials believe Sheeraz is attempting to protect his undefeated record while securing a title in the process.
For Adames, this fight offers a chance to bolster his own resume with a high-profile defense. Meanwhile, Sheeraz must prove he belongs at the world championship level by taking on a dangerous opponent in Adames. A loss could severely impact Sheeraz’s standing, as critics argue he could have solidified his reputation by taking on a fighter like Janibek, even in defeat.
