Part-time electrician Josh Padley has seized a golden opportunity to face WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson this weekend in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Originally, Stevenson was set to defend his belt against Floyd Schofield, but an unexpected illness forced Schofield out on Tuesday, leaving organizers scrambling for a suitable opponent. Enter Padley, a 29-year-old from Doncaster, England, who will now attempt to pull off one of boxing’s most unlikely upsets.
Despite being largely unknown on the world stage, Padley made waves in September by upsetting Mark Chamberlain at Wembley Stadium. That performance earned him a No. 12 ranking with the WBC and alerted matchmakers to his willingness to tackle big challenges on short notice.

Some can recall that Andy Ruiz Jr. capitalized on a similar last-minute chance against Anthony Joshua in 2019, delivering one of boxing’s greatest shockers. Padley aims to replicate that feat, albeit with far less time to prepare.
Stevenson, regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound talents (ESPN ranks him No. 9), has been laser-focused on kicking off 2025 with a statement victory. After Schofield’s withdrawal, many feared Stevenson might be left without an opponent, but fortunately for the Newark, New Jersey, native, Padley’s immediate availability saves the day. But while Padley’s willingness to step in has earned him praise, he faces a champion known for supremely sharp reflexes and pinpoint accuracy.
