William Scull, the fighter pushing Canelo Alvarez to potentially relinquish his undisputed super-middleweight status, feels justified in his pursuit of the IBF title. Despite being labeled as a no-name by some, Scull’s dedication to boxing has brought him to this pivotal moment in his career.

“I feel very good, very happy. All my life, I have done this for one great chance to fight for a world title,” said Scull in an interview with ProBox TV’s Espanol. Scull, 31, is poised for an IBF title bout against Russia’s Vladimir Shishkin, pending Alvarez’s decision to vacate the belt. Alvarez has time until next week to inform the IBF of his plans.

Scull’s journey began with 364 amateur fights in Cuba, followed by professional stints in Argentina and Germany, ultimately elevating his IBF ranking. He recently proved his skills on the undercard of Alvarez’s unanimous decision victory over Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas.

When asked if he was disappointed by Alvarez’s preference for other challengers like Edgar Berlanga, Terence Crawford, or David Benavidez, Scull expressed no resentment:

“In Cuba, I fought for the flag, for nothing. They gave me a piece of bread, a glass of water. Now, I have more motivation because I have the chance to make history and become one of the first Cubans of this generation to be crowned a world champion.”
