Roy Jones Jr. believes Mohamed Mimoune would be ready to face Rolando “Rolly” Romero if the WBA welterweight champion takes a voluntary defense before fighting Jack Catterall.

Catterall recently beat Shakhram Giyasov to win the WBA Regular belt and is waiting for his ordered shot at Romero. But with Romero expected to return in August after more than a year out, Jones thinks the champion may look for a different test first.

“Catterall is a tough fight, but I think he wants a little bit less of a fight,” Jones said of Romero. “Mimoune will be ready. He ain’t got no choice.”

Mimoune is ranked No. 9 by the WBA and holds the WBA Gold belt. Jones sees him as a dangerous but realistic opponent for Romero, mainly because the styles could bring out a real fight.

“It’s a 50/50 fight right away because of Rolly’s punching power and because of Mimoune’s experience,” Jones said.

Mimoune, who has trained with Jones since 2021, says welterweight is his true division after struggling to make super lightweight. He believes Romero’s aggressive style would give him chances to counter.

“Romero relies heavily on power, looking for a knockout with every punch,” Mimoune said. “To beat Romero, you have to catch him off guard on the counter-attack.”
