Richard Commey is back in the mix. The former IBF lightweight champion snapped a three-fight winless streak earlier this month with a second-round stoppage in Detroit, and he’s wasting no time in calling out major names. Commey, 38, has set his sights on George Kambosos Jr and Danny Garcia as he looks for one final run at the top.

Commey’s recent years have been challenging, marked by defeats to Vasyl Lomachenko and Jose Ramirez, along with a draw against Jose Pedraza. That made his return to the win column all the sweeter. “I’ve been away for a couple of years; it feels good to be back in the ring,” Commey said. “I am very happy. I kept my composure and did what I had to do.”

The Ghanaian veteran believes a clash with Kambosos would be a natural fit. “Me and Kambosos is going to be a great fight,” he declared. “If I get the chance to fight him before the year ends, I will take it with all my heart!” With both having shared the ring with Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez, Commey views the matchup as a compelling test for both men.

While a Kambosos bout might take time to materialize, Commey is also rumored for the October 18 Brooklyn card that will feature Garcia’s return. Sources suggest the two former champions could be on a collision course if both emerge successful that night. Before then, Commey is scheduled to face rising prospect Ashton Sylve, a key step in determining his future.

Reflecting on his career, Commey underlined the challenges faced by fighters from Africa. “Nobody gave me anything on a silver platter. I had to work twice [as hard] to get to where I am now,” he said. “Even to become world champion and get a title shot, I had to fight [for the opportunity]!”
