Bob Arum believes Tyson Fury has accomplished enough in the ring - and more importantly, outside of it - to walk away for good. The Hall of Fame promoter insists that Fury shouldn’t be tempted back into the squared circle after two tough losses to Oleksandr Usyk. For Arum, the Gypsy King’s larger-than-life persona and heavyweight-size showmanship were the real engines behind his fortune.
“Tyson owes it to himself and his family to remain happily retired,” said Arum, citing the estimated $250 million nest egg Fury amassed largely by hyping fights with WWE-style theatrics. Arum credits Fury’s ability to entertain as much as his skillset for drawing big audiences and big paydays. He points to the Briton’s most notable wins over Deontay Wilder and an aging Wladimir Klitschko as proof of careful matchmaking and carefully packaged hype.
Beyond the money, Arum also thinks Fury’s lost a step. With hungry contenders waiting in the wings, it’s doubtful Fury would go unscathed if he came back. Instead, Arum sees a second act for the charismatic ex-champion as a public figure and spokesperson. While Fury’s in-ring achievements remain debatable to some critics, there’s no denying the carnival-barker flair that made him a box-office smash. “He can do a lot of good,” says Arum, “just by being Tyson Fury.”
