Gary Antuanne Russell is setting his sights on a rematch with Alberto Puello after cruising to a 12-round unanimous decision win over Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Russell, who lost a narrow split decision to Puello in June of last year, believes it’s time for unfinished business – and he’s confident his revenge would be sweeter now that Puello holds the WBC light welterweight title.
The victory over Valenzuela saw Russell apply a lot of pressure, though some observers say he took more punches than necessary as he occasionally fought out of anger. However, in the post-fight presser, Russell insisted he was following his brother Gary’s instructions more closely this time, recalling how he coasted late against Puello and paid for it on the scorecards. This time, says Russell, he refused to “deviate” from the game plan – although his face told the story of Rayo’s heavy shots, especially in the last three rounds.

As for the rematch with Puello, Russell admits he wants a shot at the new champion partly out of pride. “He’s got my belts,” he quipped, “so when I beat him, I can silence him.” Still, critics caution that Puello’s sturdiness and punching power differ significantly from the “fragile” Rayo, who faded under constant pressure. Russell may need to avoid wild exchanges if he hopes to come out unscathed next time.
Whether or not the fight happens soon, Russell has made it clear: he wants redemption. Having dethroned Valenzuela for the WBA belt, the Maryland-based southpaw now feels it’s time to unify – or at least settle that score with Puello.
