Jose Ramirez (28-1, 18 KOs) is seeking a title shot against the winner of the Josh Taylor vs. Teofimo Lopez bout or Regis Prograis after his eleventh-round knockout victory over Richard Commey (30-5-1, 27 KOs) last Saturday night at Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California. Ramirez’s win over Commey, now arguably a journeyman, was a lateral move from his previous bout against Jose Pedraza in 2022. Unfortunately, this wasn’t a step up for Ramirez, and it’s unclear why he’s taking his time to face top-tier competition again.
Interestingly, Ramirez turned down a fight against an elite-level opponent in Prograis to face Commey, suggesting his confidence may not be at the level required for him to challenge for a world title. Until he managed to drop the 36-year-old Commey twice in the eleventh round, Ramirez didn't appear particularly impressive, and there was some doubt as to whether he would succeed.
Ramirez did not mention newly crowned IBF light welterweight champion Subriel Matias as one of the belt-holders he'd be interested in fighting next. Matias could be a suitable option if Ramirez fails to negotiate a deal with Prograis or the Taylor-Lopez winner.
Matias’ fighting style aligns well with Ramirez's approach and would make for an excellent match to bring back to the Save Mart Arena in Fresno.
