Peter Fury believes Tyson Fury used the wrong tactics in both of his fights with Oleksandr Usyk, arguing that his nephew should have used his size and pressure instead of trying to outbox one of the sport’s best technicians.
Peter, who famously guided Tyson to victory over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, returned to attention recently after helping Rico Verhoeven push Usyk hard in Egypt. Verhoeven ultimately lost by 11th-round stoppage, but his physical approach caused Usyk far more problems than expected.
Looking back at Tyson’s two defeats to Usyk, Peter said the strategy was not right. “You are the bigger man. You come in at 20 stone and done all the wrong things. Instead of going forward, [Tyson] stood back,” he told TalkSPORT.
Peter made clear he was not attacking Tyson’s current team, but he believes the approach gave Usyk exactly what he wanted. “His tactics in both fights were all wrong,” he said. “If you stand off and try to box an elite boxer who is lighter than you, he will ping you all over the shop.”
For Peter, the lesson from Verhoeven’s performance was simple: Usyk can be made uncomfortable when a bigger man applies pressure and takes away his rhythm. Whether Tyson could have done that differently will remain one of the biggest “what ifs” of his heavyweight career.
