Liam Paro has solidified his status as the new top contender at 140 lbs after delivering a flawless performance against Subriel Matias, spoiling Matias' homecoming in Puerto Rico last Saturday night. With this victory, Paro captured the IBF junior welterweight title, quickly becoming a sensation in Australia. Before his first world title fight, Paro promised to shock the world, and he did that.
Matias found himself on the defensive from the start as Paro took the fight to him. As the bout progressed, Matias tried to assert his dominance, putting Paro under pressure and even causing a point deduction for holding and hitting in the seventh round. Nonetheless, Paro stayed composed, finishing the fight strong by securing the final three rounds on two judges' scorecards. Ultimately, he won with scores of 115-112 twice and 116-111.
"I made a promise to my mate Regan Grieve, who passed away, that I would do this, and I am a man of my word. To all the people that doubted me, it’s Paro time! I am the man in the 140 lb division now."
Reflecting on his journey, he added:
"I’ve been to hell and back in my life and faced tougher battles mentally. I always said I would get carried out if I had to, but we both go home safe to our families."
Paro acknowledged Matias as a tough opponent and expressed his gratitude for the support from Puerto Rican fans. He emphasized the significance of winning in Matias' backyard, saying, "He hits hard, he’s got 20 KOs for a reason, but I’m a true warrior, I’ve got the heart of a lion and I showed that. I hope I won some fans here."
Promoter Eddie Hearn is now planning a homecoming fight for Paro, recognizing the potential for world championship boxing in Australia.
"Liam Paro became a big name tonight. You’ve got Ryan Garcia, Pitbull Cruz, Teofimo Lopez, Richardson Hitchins; it’s an incredible night for Liam and Australian boxing."
