Oscar De La Hoya has made it clear that he won’t be tuning in to watch Canelo Alvarez take on Edgar Berlanga on September 14th. Instead, De La Hoya revealed that he plans to attend the UFC event at the new Sphere in Las Vegas, which is taking place on the same night as Canelo’s fight at T-Mobile Arena. In a scathing Instagram post, De La Hoya criticized the Canelo-Berlanga bout, calling it a fight “nobody asked for” and expressing his frustration with the $89.99 pay-per-view price, labeling it “just robbery.”
“So we are a week away from the boxing match that nobody asked for and the UFC event that everybody will be watching! Canelo is fighting Berlanga – another snoozefest!” De La Hoya wrote. He went on to say that paying $90 for the PPV or $500 for a ticket to see the fight live is unreasonable, and that Canelo’s fights against “sub-par opponents” tend to “always go the distance.”
The hardest punches Canelo has ever faced?: Watch
This isn’t the first time De La Hoya has criticized Canelo, but his decision to publicly declare his support for the UFC event over the Canelo-Berlanga fight underscores just how deep the rift between the two has grown. De La Hoya further explained that he’s choosing to attend the UFC event not because he dislikes boxing, but because he feels that this particular fight isn’t worth watching.
While De La Hoya’s comments are harsh, some may wonder if there’s truth to his criticism. Canelo-Berlanga may not be the most anticipated fight, especially with fans clamoring for a matchup between Canelo and David Benavidez. However, Berlanga is an undefeated young fighter with power, and the fight could still provide intrigue. Still, the hefty PPV price tag could deter some fans, especially with the Anthony Joshua-Daniel Dubois heavyweight fight available just a week later for $19.99.
It will be interesting to see how the PPV sales for Canelo-Berlanga fare, given the competition from the UFC event and the growing concerns over high-priced pay-per-views. As De La Hoya continues to voice his disapproval, fans will have to decide whether they want to shell out the money for a fight he’s labeled as “lame” or save their cash for other options.
