Oscar Collazo, Puerto Rico’s proud WBO strawweight titleholder, has ambitiously set his sights on battling the Shigeoka siblings, aiming to dominate the strawweight division with a series of high-profile unification fights. The Shigeoka brothers, Yudai and Ginjiro, who hold the WBC and IBF titles respectively, represent a new generation of strawweight talent captivating audiences well beyond the hardcore boxing enthusiasts.

In an interview, Collazo expressed confidence in the feasibility of facing off against at least one of the Shigeoka brothers for a unification bout within the year. “Everyone wants to see an undisputed champion in every division,” Collazo remarked, highlighting the widespread anticipation for such a clash among boxing fans.

However, the path to unification encounters a roadblock with Thammanoon Niyomtrong, also known as Knockout CP Freshmart, the WBA titleholder, whose lack of activity has been a point of frustration for fighters and fans alike. Unlike Niyomtrong, Collazo and the Shigeoka brothers have shown a keen interest in competing against the best, setting the stage for potential unification bouts.

Collazo, at 27, recently showcased his prowess with a third-round knockout victory over Reyneris Gutierrez, marking his fourth fight in a year and demonstrating his commitment to staying active in the ring. Meanwhile, Yudai Shigeoka solidified his position as the WBC strawweight champion with notable victories in 2023, and Ginjiro Shigeoka continued his ascent in the division with a dramatic win over Daniel Valladares.

Both Shigeoka brothers are preparing for title defenses against formidable Filipino challengers, setting up an intriguing lead-up to a potential showdown with Collazo later in the year. Collazo, undeterred by the competition, is keen on making a statement by challenging the Shigeokas and ultimately aiming for a bout against Niyomtrong, should the latter choose to engage with the division's elite.
