On June 26, 1976, Muhammad Ali entered the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo for one of the strangest fights of his career. Across from him was not another heavyweight contender, but Japanese wrestling icon Antonio Inoki. The bout was billed as “The War of the Worlds” - boxing’s greatest champion against one of Japan’s biggest martial arts stars.

What followed confused and frustrated almost everyone watching. Because of the special rules, Inoki spent most of the fight on his back, repeatedly kicking Ali’s legs while the heavyweight champion struggled to land meaningful punches. The crowd booed, fans demanded refunds, and the 15-round contest ended in a draw.

At the time, many viewed the fight as a disaster. Ali’s legs were badly swollen afterward, and reports later said the damage affected his mobility. Inoki, meanwhile, was criticized for his tactics, even though the restrictive rules left him with few realistic options against the world heavyweight champion.

But history has been kinder to the spectacle. Decades later, Ali vs Inoki is often remembered as one of the early precursors to modern MMA. It was awkward, strange, and far from entertaining - but it also showed the fascination of pitting different fighting styles against each other.
