On June 7, 2003, Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward walked into Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall for one last war. Their first fight had already become legend. Their second proved the rivalry was no accident. But the third meeting, billed as “The Final Chapter,” carried something even deeper - it was Ward’s last fight, Gatti’s chance to win the trilogy, and the final act of one of boxing’s most brutal friendships.
From the opening round, it felt like both men knew what the night meant. Ward came out aggressively and opened a cut over Gatti’s left eye, while an accidental head clash reopened familiar damage around Ward’s own eye. Gatti tried to box more cleanly, using movement and sharper combinations, but Ward kept dragging him back into the kind of fight only these two could produce.
The drama exploded in the middle rounds. Gatti appeared to break his right hand after landing low near Ward’s hip, yet somehow continued fighting through the pain. Ward, sensing the shift, attacked with left hooks, uppercuts, and the kind of pressure that had defined his career. Then, in the sixth round, Ward dropped Gatti again.
But Gatti survived, adjusted, and fought through the injury. Over the final rounds, both men looked exhausted and damaged, yet neither would give in. The tenth round became a fitting goodbye: Ward and Gatti hugged before the bell, then spent the final moments trading punches in the center of the ring, emptying whatever they had left.
Gatti won by unanimous decision, taking the trilogy 2-1. But the scorecards were almost secondary. After three fights, 30 rounds, and unforgettable punishment, Gatti and Ward rivalry became a symbol of courage, respect, and everything fans love about boxing.
