On this day, exactly 4 years ago, Jermell Charlo and Brian Castaño walked into the ring to settle a year-long argument. Their first meeting had ended in a controversial split draw, with every belt at 154 pounds still hanging in the air and fans divided over who really deserved to be called undisputed light middleweight champion. This time, there would be no room for debate. One night, one rematch, one champion.

The rematch had already built extra tension before the opening bell. Originally scheduled for March, the fight was postponed after Castaño suffered a biceps injury in training, leading to frustration from Charlo’s side. By the time they finally met in Carson, California, the atmosphere had shifted from competitive respect to real urgency. Castaño had openly said he didn’t want to leave anything in the judges’ hands again. Charlo wanted to erase the controversy completely.

For much of the fight, it looked like another war. Castaño brought the same relentless pressure that troubled Charlo in the first meeting, forcing exchanges and making the champion work every second. But Charlo made the key adjustments. He stayed off the ropes more, picked his shots with greater precision, and gradually began to break Castaño down. Then came the moment everything changed.

A brutal body shot started the collapse in 10th rounds. Charlo dropped Castaño, and when the Argentine beat the count, the finish came quickly. A clean left hand upstairs followed by another attack sent Castaño crashing down again, badly hurt and unable to recover. The rematch was over by knockout, and the argument with it.

With that win, Charlo became the undisputed champion at 154 pounds and one of the few men in the four-belt era to unify an entire division.
