Commentator Jim Lampley has high hopes for David Benavidez, suggesting that the undefeated fighter has the potential to become the "face of boxing."

Lampley believes that Benavidez has the talent to eventually move up to heavyweight and possibly become a world champion. For now, Benavidez is set to face Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC interim light heavyweight title on June 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, broadcasted on PBC on Prime Video PPV. A win could set Benavidez up for a future bout against the winner of the Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev undisputed light heavyweight championship in 2025.

Benavidez's journey to becoming the "Face of Boxing" hinges on his performance against Gvozdyk and potentially defeating the Bivol-Beterbiev winner. Staying at 175 pounds and then moving to cruiserweight would be strategic for Benavidez to gain more popularity and bigger fights. Returning to 168 pounds may not provide the opportunities he needs, especially since Canelo Alvarez has shown little interest in fighting him. So, Benavidez's success at higher weight classes could transform him into a major star.

Reflecting on his past sparring session with Gvozdyk, Benavidez expressed confidence in his preparation and growth as a fighter:

"When I sparred him, I was 20 or 21 years old. So imagine everything I’ve been through and everything I’ve learned," Benavidez stated.

He also emphasized his improvements in strength and conditioning, believing that his increased experience will give him an edge in their upcoming fight. Benavidez acknowledged Gvozdyk’s honesty about their sparring sessions but remains determined to secure a dominant victory.

During a press conference, Lampley highlighted Benavidez's potential to become the face of boxing in a dignified manner, contrasting it with the heated exchanges often seen in the sport. Benavidez agreed:

"I want to show the fighters that we can be gentlemen in the sport. We can conduct ourselves with different behavior."

Benavidez is focused on studying Gvozdyk and preparing meticulously for their bout:

"He’s a great guy and it’s going to be a great fight. I look forward to it," Benavidez said.
