Eddie Hearn, the renowned promoter from Matchroom Boxing, has weighed in on the potential showdown between Jaime Munguia and Canelo Alvarez, set for May 4th. In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Hearn highlighted Munguia's youth and fighting spirit as key factors that could make this matchup surprisingly competitive.
Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), only 27, has been on a remarkable winning streak and recently added another victory by stopping John Ryder (32-7, 18 KOs) in the ninth round in Phoenix, Arizona. Hearn emphasized that while Canelo boasts technical superiority and a higher boxing IQ, Munguia’s youthfulness and his unblemished record of 43 wins add an intriguing dimension to the bout.
The Matchroom boss believes that Munguia’s freshness and eagerness could give him an edge, contrasting with Canelo, who, despite his formidable track record, is not as young and fresh. Hearn suggests that Munguia’s desire and determination, something he feels was lacking in Gennadiy Golovkin during his trilogy fight with Canelo, could make a significant difference.
In the event Munguia doesn’t land the fight with Canelo, Hearn expressed interest in arranging a clash between Munguia and Edgar Berlanga, another young powerhouse with a strong following and devastating punching power. He foresees such a matchup as a massive event, especially given Berlanga’s popularity in New York.
