Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao II is being positioned as a landmark event for the streaming era rather than a repeat of the 2015 pay-per-view spectacle.
Speaking to World Boxing News, Mathur acknowledged that their first fight remains the financial benchmark in boxing history. “The 2015 fight set the bar as the highest-grossing pay-per-view event in boxing history,” he said, adding that 11 years later the two icons are “positioned to raise it once again.”
Mathur believes the move to Netflix fundamentally changes the scale of the event. “Back then, they shattered every record in the traditional pay-per-view era; now they’re about to redefine the standard in the global streaming era,” he explained. With Netflix’s worldwide subscriber base and premium production, Mathur expects the rematch to become “the most watched sporting event in Netflix history.”
He added that the fight is projected to surpass Netflix’s previous live streams of Tyson vs. Paul and Canelo vs. Crawford. “This isn’t about matching what was done before,” Mathur said. “It’s about breaking barriers all over again and proving that when these two come together, they change the game.”
Unlike the original bout, which depended on pay-per-view buys and regional access, the rematch will stream on a subscription platform with a built-in global audience. Full undercard details and further event information are expected in the coming weeks.
