Filipino contender Mark Magsayo might be on the cusp of a major showdown. According to Viva Promotions, Magsayo is being considered as a backup opponent for Gervonta “Tank” Davis, should Davis’s March 1 fight at the Barclays Center against Lamont Roach fall through. Already ranked No. 2 at junior lightweight, Magsayo was eyeing a title eliminator bout with Eduardo Hernandez, but this new opportunity could propel him onto an even bigger stage.
Magsayo, a former WBC featherweight titleholder, has won three straight fights since a defeat against Brandon Figueroa in 2023. The 28-year-old slugger has been steadily climbing back up the rankings, showing improved form in each victory. Meanwhile, Davis has looked unstoppable, disposing of Ryan Garcia and Frank Martin in his two most notable outings. With 28 knockouts among his 30 wins, Tank has become one of the most feared punchers in boxing.

A matchup between Magsayo and Davis brings a fascinating style clash. Magsayo’s aggression tested top names at featherweight, and he believes he can keep that momentum when moving up in weight. Davis, for his part, has thunderous power that’s spelled trouble for virtually all of his opponents.
Should this fight happen, Magsayo would join the short list of Filipino fighters to share the ring with Davis. If Magsayo can pull off the upset, it could elevate him to instant superstardom. For Davis, however, another knockout victory would only reinforce his image as one of the sport’s biggest draws.
