Heavyweight contender Arslanbek Makhmudov insists he is “ready” for Anthony Joshua after defeating Dave Allen by decision in Sheffield earlier this month, as the 35-year-old Russian believes his latest performance has earned him a shot at the two-time world champion.

“I am ready,” Makhmudov told Sky Sports. “We spoke before the fight with AJ and he gave me a promise – if I win this fight [against Allen], he would fight me. So I am just waiting for a response from AJ. When will we fight? I wait for you and I am ready for you.”

Makhmudov’s win over Allen may not have been spectacular, but it did boost his profile among British fans. Fighting in front of 9,000 spectators, he handled the durable Doncaster native with control and composure, though he never appeared close to scoring a stoppage. Still, for Makhmudov, the victory served as both exposure and momentum in his pursuit of higher-profile fights.

However, several factors may stand in the way of his Joshua ambitions. While Makhmudov’s performance was competent, it lacked the explosiveness that typically fuels public demand for a Joshua bout. Moreover, reports suggest that Matchroom Boxing is planning a card in Ghana on December 20, potentially paving the way for Joshua to headline there next February. Should that plan materialize, it appears unlikely Makhmudov will be part of Joshua’s immediate plans.

Still, Makhmudov remains optimistic. “The UK fans know me. I showed a good performance in my last fight,” he said. “It’s just the question: When can I fight AJ?”
