2020 Olympic Silver medalist, Keyshawn Davis, finds himself in hot water. The rising lightweight star recently tested positive for marijuana following his bout against Nahir Albright on October 14 at the Fort Bend Epicenter, Rosenberg, Texas. Despite marijuana being legal in many states, Texas maintains its prohibition, leading the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) to slap Davis with a 90-day suspension. His win has also been revised to a No-Contest.
This brief yet significant suspension poses a setback for the undefeated Davis. Previously slated for the December 9 ESPN card in Florida, Davis will now miss this event. Considering his appearances on the 2021 and 2022 ESPN cards post the Heisman Trophy presentation, this serves as a blow to both Davis and fans. The suspension, running back from October 14, implies Davis can’t step back into the ring until January 14, as mandated by the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC).
Notably, TDLR’s 90-day suspension is a standard response to drug testing infractions. Past recipients include Chris Arreola in 2015, and Mexico’s Alejandra Jimenez in 2020, whose title win was subsequently marked as a No-Contest due to testing positive for a prohibited substance.
