Liam Paro is said to be in talks to defend his recently acquired IBF light welterweight championship against former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. In November within Australia. This potential showdown between Paro and Kambosos has stirred up a lot of excitement among Australian boxing enthusiasts who are eager to witness these two top fighters go head to head.

George Kambosos Jr. will be stepping up from the 135 pound category for a shot at this world title against the undefeated Liam Paro. For those outside of Australia, the decision for Paro to defend his IBF 140 lb title against the 31 year old Kambosos might raise some eyebrows, especially considering Kambosos recent loss by knockout in the 11th round to Vasily Lomachenko on May 12th in Perth, Australia.

Known as “The Emperor”, Kambosos has had a challenging period in his career, with three losses in his last four fights following his surprising victory over IBF, WBA and WBO lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez via twelve round split decision on November 27, 2021. That win over Lopez briefly catapulted Kambosos into the spotlight with notable bouts against Devin Haney (twice), Maxi Hughes and Lomachenko. Despite facing recent challenges, Kambosos remains a sought after figure and is now being considered for a shot at a world title against Paro, with talks of it possibly becoming a pay per view event in Australia.

Kambosos sole victory in the last three years came from a closely contested twelve round majority decision win over Maxi Hughes on July 22, 2023, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Many fans of boxing felt that Hughes was unjustly robbed of the win as he seemed to have outperformed Kambosos throughout the match.

Paro's promoter, Eddie Hearn, is enthusiastic about setting up future bouts for Paro against renowned fighters like Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson. However, the immediate focus is on the natural yet not widely recognized matchup with Kambosos. At 28 years old, Paro clinched the IBF 140 pound title by besting Subriel Matias on June 15th through a strategic “punch & grab” approach to secure victory.
