Former Olympic silver medalist Shakur Stevenson has been making major strides in the boxing world, particularly within the 135-pound division. Up until recently, George Kambosos Jr., the then-reigning unified champion, was a target that Stevenson had marked for a future clash. However, Kambosos’ credibility took a hit after successive defeats to Devin Haney, altering the division's power dynamics significantly.
Stevenson, ever the vigilant competitor, kept a keen eye on Kambosos' latest performance against Maxi Hughes. Though Kambosos was awarded the majority decision victory, Stevenson was unimpressed and openly expressed his disbelief over the result. Once a desirable adversary in his sights, Kambosos no longer holds that allure for Stevenson. He bluntly declared on social media that Kambosos was “not on my level,” and that he was setting his sights on the “top dogs” of the division.
An unexpected face-to-face encounter between Stevenson and Kambosos ensued a fiery exchange of words, with Stevenson asserting his dominance and predicting a straightforward victory against Kambosos. However, upon reflection, Stevenson admitted that engaging with Kambosos in such a manner was a mistake. He recognizes that his future lies in taking on the division’s elite fighters, and he sees a fight against Kambosos as a step back, not forward. Instead, he intends to focus his energy on worthy opponents that will elevate his standing within the 135-pound division.
