Joseph “JoJo” Diaz has withdrawn from his scheduled bout this weekend due to health concerns. Originally set to face Richard Medina on the Alexis Rocha-Giovanni Santillan DAZN undercard, Diaz got Covid-like symptoms during his training camp, making him unfit to compete at the upcoming event at Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.
Golden Boy Promotions is actively searching for a replacement opponent for Medina to ensure he remains on the card. Although it’s likely that this fight will be moved off the main DAZN broadcast, efforts are being made to let the 23-year-old from San Antonio compete on Saturday.
Had he been healthy, this would’ve marked Diaz’s third fight in 2023 and fourth within a year. The California-based boxer had recently secured a victory over Jerry Perez in July. After that bout, there had been speculations about a potential clash between Diaz and undefeated lightweight Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield, but no concrete plans materialized.
Medina, on the other hand, has been on a winning streak since his defeat to featherweight contender Raymond Ford in June. If he remains on this weekend’s roster, it would be Medina’s debut fight outside Texas.
