Johnny Fisher’s return to the ring has taken an unexpected twist, with the heavyweight prospect now set to face Ivan Balaz on just two days’ notice in Monaco. The switch comes after his original opponent, Ugandan puncher Herbert Matovu, was forced out due to visa issues, leaving Matchroom Boxing to secure an unbeaten 7-0 Slovakian as the replacement.
Fisher had been preparing for Matovu, a heavy-handed danger man who has boxed across Africa, Russia, and Japan. But with Matovu unable to travel to Monaco, Balaz steps in as a late but undefeated replacement. Though far less experienced, the Slovakian brings ambition and a clean record into what will be the biggest opportunity of his career.
Reflecting on his transition, Fisher expressed deep appreciation for Tibbs while embracing the new chapter ahead. Training among names like Conor Benn, John Ryder, Jimmy Sains, and George Liddard, Fisher says he feels revitalized: “To be among those names… I know I’m going to get pushed very hard.”
Now, with a last-minute opponent switch and the pressure of rebuilding after his first professional knockout, Fisher’s comeback in Monaco carries even more intrigue. A win could steady the course of his career - but at this stage, nothing is guaranteed.
