Joe Cordina is set to appear in court next month after being charged with assault and threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public place.
South Wales Police confirmed the charges relate to an incident outside a petrol station in Pentwyn, Cardiff, last February. Cordina, 34, from Pontprennau, is due to appear at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on July 7.
Another man, Jamie O’Brien, 32, from Pentwyn, has also been charged with assault and is due to appear at the same court on July 28.
The charges come at a difficult time for Cordina, who had been scheduled to challenge Abdullah Mason for the WBO lightweight title in Cleveland on July 4. That fight is now off after Cordina said his US visa application was denied by the American embassy in London.
Cordina had been hoping to become a two-weight world champion. The former IBF super featherweight champion lost his 130lbs title to Anthony Cacace in May 2024, the only defeat of his 19-fight professional career.
Since then, the Welshman has moved to lightweight, winning the vacant WBO global title against Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz before beating Gabriel Flores Jr by unanimous decision in California last December.
