James Hagler Jr. has spoken out against proposed changes to the Ali Act after Marvin Hagler’s name was referenced during Senate discussions, as he does not want his family legacy tied to reforms he believes could reduce fighters’ rights.

Hagler Jr. said he was unhappy with his grandfather’s name being used in support of changes that, in his view, would take freedom away from boxers. He pointed to Marvin Hagler’s own career as an example, as the former champion was not tied to one promoter and instead worked on a fight-by-fight basis.

His concern is that the proposed structure could leave fighters with less control over their careers, especially if promoters gain greater influence over rankings, titles, and opportunities. Hagler Jr. warned that boxers should always have the right to walk away if they do not see eye to eye with a promoter.

He also said that if the changes go through, Muhammad Ali’s name should not be associated with them. Nico Ali Walsh, Ali’s grandson, has also opposed the proposed reforms through the Ali Act Preservation Alliance.
