Eddie Hearn says he’s "confident" about delivering a unification bout between WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis and WBC titleholder Shakur Stevenson. According to Hearn, this is the biggest money fight out there for both guys, assuming “everyone is sensible” at the negotiating table.
Tank is tentatively scheduled to face Lamont Roach next, but Hearn believes Davis will need a much bigger name if he truly wants massive paydays. Meanwhile, Shakur, 27, is making his first appearance under a two-fight deal with Matchroom this Saturday - albeit against a late replacement after Floyd Schofield withdrew due to illness.
Some question whether Hearn’s partnership with Shakur can live up to the promoter’s ambitions of creating a "global star." Stevenson’s slick style hasn’t exactly endeared him to casual U.S. audiences, who often prefer more action-oriented fighters. If Hearn can’t line up big fights - such as a potential showdown with Tank Davis - he may end up disappointed with the return on his two-fight deal.
Still, Hearn remains adamant: if Davis wants major pay-per-view money, Stevenson is the logical target. It’s now on the fighters, managers, and networks to see if they can sidestep boxing’s usual politics and deliver what could be one of the most significant bouts in the 135-pound division.
