The International Boxing Association is working toward a potential deal with Artur Beterbiev, though ongoing geopolitical challenges continue to complicate the organization’s progress. IBA Pro director general Al Siesta confirmed that discussions are underway but acknowledged that the current global climate makes planning difficult.

The IBA has been gaining visibility through recent events, including a December show in Dubai where Murat Gassiev defeated Kubrat Pulev to claim the WBA regular heavyweight title. The organization has also hosted cards in regions such as Russia and Central Asia, though accessibility and international engagement remain inconsistent.

Siesta pointed to geopolitical unrest and international sanctions as key barriers, particularly affecting fighters from countries in the former Soviet bloc. He described the situation as “paralyzing” for athletes in those regions, noting that travel restrictions, cultural divides, and political tensions have limited the organization’s ability to operate globally at full capacity.

Despite these challenges, the IBA continues to attract notable figures from the sport, with fighters such as Tyson Fury, Terence Crawford, and Beterbiev having attended recent events. The organization is attempting to expand into more accessible locations like Istanbul and Dubai, with hopes of reaching broader audiences in Europe in the future.

Siesta also addressed the evolving boxing landscape, including the emergence of new promotional models, emphasizing the importance of tradition and established sanctioning bodies in the sport. While acknowledging differing business approaches, he maintained that boxing’s history and structure remain central to its identity.

As talks with Beterbiev continue, the IBA remains optimistic about its future, even as political and logistical obstacles continue to shape its path forward.
