Former WBO junior lightweight titleholder and distinguished U.S. Marine is gearing up for a Veteran’s Day-inspired return to the boxing ring. Sources reveal that the much-anticipated bout is scheduled for November 7, headlining a Pro-Am event at the Edison Ballroom in New York City. While Jamel Herring’s opponent is yet to be finalized, he is confirmed to make a comeback to the 130-pound division, following a brief stint as a lightweight.

The event promises more action, with emerging talents Kurt Scoby and Mikiah Kreps showcasing their skills in individual bouts. Worth noting is that Kreps, who is co-managed by Herring and Jerry Cazares, is under the banner of DiBella Entertainment—the same outfit that signed Scoby earlier this year.

Originally planned to be held at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, the black-tie occasion will now have the academy as its host. The night is dedicated to all military personnel, with a special nod to those who laid down their lives during wartime. Herring, a proud native of Long Island, New York, and a veteran of two Iraq tours, had previously declared retirement after consecutive losses, one of which ended his WBO 130-pound title run of over two years. However, the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team captain reconsidered his decision, initially weighing the idea of challenging IBF junior lightweight titleholder Joe Cordina. In the end, the plan solidified around a comeback-level fight, allowing assessment of the 37-year-old southpaw’s current prowess, especially after an eighteen-month hiatus from the sport.

Guiding Herring through his return journey is Wayne McCullough—a 1992 Olympic Silver medalist and former WBC bantamweight champion. Their training regimen will unfold in Las Vegas, under McCullough’s watchful eye.
