Promoter Eddie Hearn is determined to secure a rematch between his fighter Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia, despite Garcia’s controversy surrounding two positive PED tests. Hearn believes that if Garcia can clear his name, the fight could generate a substantial payday for Haney and provide a significant boost to both fighters' careers.
Hearn’s stance has shifted from demanding a lifetime ban for Garcia over the PED scandal to now advocating for a rematch. This could be Haney's last chance for a significant payday. With questions about Haney’s durability at 140 pounds and his perceived lack of power, Hearn aims to secure the biggest possible fight before Haney's career potentially declines.
“Imagine you’re Devin Haney. You had to fight this guy [Ryan Garcia] that is a lot heavier than him, and now you found that out as well,” Hearn told Fight Hub TV.
Despite the challenges, Hearn has managed to guide Haney’s career effectively through strategic matchmaking. He is now pushing for the rematch with Garcia to maximize Haney's earnings and exposure. Hearn is also aware that avoiding punchers in the top ten of the light welterweight division is crucial for Haney’s longevity.
“That’s been ordered by the WBC. It’s a good fight for Devin. It’s not an easy fight,” Hearn said about the WBC ordering Haney to defend against his mandatory Sandor Martin next.
Hearn also shared his interaction with Garcia, who maintains his innocence regarding the failed drug tests.
“Ryan walked up to me and said, ‘Let’s quash the beef.’ I keep saying on your behalf that I hope that you’re innocent, but you still failed two drug tests. Don’t say it’s my fault because that’s ridiculous. 'No, no, I’ve been set up. Well, you haven’t certainly not by me.' I think a lot of what he does is to create noise and hype, and he does a great job of it.”
