Canelo Alvarez is showing no love for David Benavidez, brushing off the unbeaten 26-year-old by insisting he’s accomplished “nothing.” During a recent interview with FightHype, Alvarez launched a verbal jab at Benavidez’s credentials.
“He’s very disrespectful, not just with me but with everybody,” Alvarez said. “He’s accomplished nothing. He’s not even a champion.”
The irony isn’t lost on fans, who have been clamoring for a showdown between the two for years. While Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) dominated an impressive lineup - including David Morrell, Oleksandr Gvozdyk, and Caleb Plant - Canelo is opting to face William Scull on May 3 before taking on 38-year-old Terence Crawford in a September spectacle some are calling a “circus fight.”
Yet Alvarez remains dismissive, arguing that Benavidez, now based at 175 lbs, is no longer in his weight class. Critics, however, point to the years both men spent in the same 168 lb division, saying the Mexican icon simply avoided a risky meeting with the younger, power-punching Benavidez.
Still, Alvarez is adamant his stellar résumé speaks for itself:
“At this point in my career, I can do whatever I want. You can’t take anything from my legacy or my career.”
