Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson appear to have found common ground online, agreeing in principle to a possible 144lbs catchweight fight.
Haney currently holds the WBO welterweight title at 147lbs, while Stevenson holds the WBO title at 140lbs. The weight gap had been the obvious issue, but Stevenson suggested meeting in the middle.
“144 is fair for 2 champions in 2 separate weight classes,” Stevenson wrote, pointing to Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez as an example of a major catchweight fight. He also noted that Haney had fought Jose Ramirez at that weight two fights ago.
Haney then asked directly: “If I come to 144... We have a fight?” Stevenson’s answer was simple: “Yes.”
The exchange came after Haney said a fight with Stevenson would be bigger than a potential bout with Keyshawn Davis. Stevenson responded by questioning whether he would be forced to move all the way to Haney’s division, before offering 144lbs as the compromise.
