Gervonta Davis has returned to the conversation after nearly 16 months out of the ring, with talks now building around a possible fight against WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney.
The exchange started on social media when an account believed to be Davis posted that he was “going for” Haney. Haney fired back by telling Davis to have Al Haymon call, then later claimed Davis’ team had reached out.
“I think Gervonta grew some balls,” Haney posted. “His team reached out! We might just end up fighting!”
There is said to be mutual interest in making the fight, but Haney’s WBO situation could complicate things. The sanctioning body is expected to order him to negotiate with mandatory challenger Keyshawn Davis in early July, and Gervonta Davis is not ranked by the WBO at welterweight.
Davis’ own lightweight status may also change soon. Floyd Schofield Snr. said he has been informed the WBA will remove Davis as its lightweight “champion in recess,” which would open the door for Floyd Schofield Jr. to pursue a WBA title fight with Lucas Bahdi.
Another major change could come in Davis’ corner. Jose Benavidez Snr. is being discussed as a possible new trainer, with Premier Boxing Champions interested in pairing Davis with the father and trainer of David Benavidez. The agreement is not finalized.
