Tyson Fury, the boxing heavyweight, has downplayed the significance of a training video from Francis Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, which surfaced after an open workout in Las Vegas. Critics have pointed out potential weaknesses in Ngannou’s footwork and punching technique, especially in comparison to Fury’s more refined boxing skills. However, Fury remains cautious, asserting that what fighters display in training videos isn’t necessarily indicative of their real-time strategy or capability.
In an interview, Fury expressed skepticism about reading too much into training videos. “I haven’t paid it much attention,” Fury remarked, suggesting that such videos can be misleading. Citing Mike Tyson’s famous quote about everyone having a plan until they get punched, Fury indicated that the real test for any fighter is how they respond in the ring, not what they display in training.
Despite the overwhelming odds in his favor, with FanDuel sportsbook listing Fury as a 20-1 favorite, the stakes remain high for the British boxer. A loss to Ngannou, whom many view as a boxing novice, could jeopardize the appeal of Fury’s forthcoming title unification bout against Oleksandr Usyk.
Contracts are already in place for Fury and Usyk, the holder of the IBF, IBO, WBA, and WBO belts, to square off on December 23 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh. This fight carries historical significance, with the winner potentially becoming the first fully unified heavyweight champion in the four-belt era.
Fury remains respectful of Ngannou’s capabilities, acknowledging the UFC star’s knockout power and assuring that he’s taking the challenge very seriously. “I just think he’s a big, dangerous fella,” Fury commented, promising to stay focused and play to his strengths in the ring.
