Frank Warren called the December 19 bout “a car crash waiting to happen”, as the heavyweight promoter, who represents Tyson Fury, believes Paul’s leap into a professional fight with a former unified champion will play out exactly how most expect.

Joshua signed on to face Paul after the YouTuber-turned-boxer’s fight with Gervonta Davis collapsed earlier this month. Paul had long listed Joshua as a dream opponent, and with the opening created by Davis’ withdrawal, the matchup quickly materialized. Although the event is expected to draw huge numbers, Warren made it clear he sees only one outcome.

“It’s a big moment for him, he’s a massive underdog,” Warren told ESPN. “Everyone will think it’s going to be rubber-stamped. It’s got car crash written all over it. People will watch it… but he’s [Joshua] taking the money and it’s a safe option. I’d much rather he be in there fighting Moses Itauma.”

Despite the controversy surrounding Joshua’s decision, hopes remain that the long-anticipated Joshua vs. Fury showdown could finally happen next year. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that he is working with Saudi chairman Turki Alalshikh toward a 2026 meeting, with Joshua expected to box again in February. Warren, however, stressed that the final call rests solely with Fury.

“Tyson will make his decision,” Warren said. “All it’s about with Tyson is does he want to do it, and how much? If the offer is right, he’ll do it.”
