Welterweight contenders Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford exchanged barbs at their recent press conferences in Beverly Hills, California, and Manhattan. Crawford’s continued use of fishing metaphors to promote their upcoming bout amused Spence. Interrupting Crawford during a Showtime interview, Spence quipped, “Man, that’s cap. He’s not catchin’ me wit no fishing pole, man. I’m the biggest. You can’t catch me with no fishing pole. What it look like catching Moby Dick wit a f------ fishing pole, man? Get the f--- outta here, bruh.”
In response, Crawford, an avid fisherman, stood by his metaphor: “Every last one of ‘em has been caught before. And July 29th, he gonna be caught, too. I got a big enough hook for him, and I’m already reeling him in.” Crawford, the WBO welterweight champion, interprets his successful bid to secure a fight with the undefeated IBF/WBA/WBC welterweight champion Spence as having “caught” his opponent.
Crawford continued with his fishing analogies, even incorporating Spence’s father into his playful taunts. The welterweight champions will headline Showtime Pay-Per-View’s broadcast on July 29 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will establish the first fully unified welterweight champion of the four-belt era, assuming a draw or no-contest isn't the result.
