Jaron Ennis has revealed that he asked Eddie Hearn for a fight with Conor Benn while both men were linked to Matchroom Boxing, only for the idea to be shut down immediately.
Benn has since left Matchroom, and Hearn has spoken openly about fights that were discussed during their time together. He recently claimed Benn turned down proposed world title opportunities against Rolando Romero, Lewis Crocker and Josh Kelly.
Speaking on the All The Smoke Fight Podcast, Ennis said he also wanted his chance. “I told Eddie to let me fight him,” Ennis said. “I said that I would fight Conor, he turned around and said ‘absolutely not.’”
Ennis still gave Benn credit, saying the British welterweight is improving. “He is good and I think he is getting better,” he said.
Ennis is now preparing to challenge Xander Zayas for the unified super welterweight title, as he looks to become a two-weight world champion.
Benn, meanwhile, is expected to target Ryan Garcia for the WBC welterweight title later this year. If he eventually moves to 154lbs, the Ennis fight could become easier to revisit now that Benn is no longer with Matchroom.
