Daniel Dubois says he is willing to fight Fabio Wardley again, but he will not put his WBO heavyweight title reign on hold for too long.
Dubois stopped Wardley in 11 rounds last month to win the belt after surviving two early knockdowns in a dramatic fight at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena. Wardley quickly triggered his contracted rematch clause, but he also took heavy punishment and may need time before committing to a date.
Dubois made his position clear. “I’m not going to wait on no one,” he told TalkSPORT. “I’m going to get busy with that belt and defend that belt.”
The new champion believes he would be sharper in a second fight. “I expect to be a lot better, an improved version of myself now that I’m champion,” Dubois said. “It’s time to go and clean up this division again. I’m on my journey to getting all the belts and securing my legacy.”
Dubois admitted he may have preferred a different fight next, but he is ready to run it back if required. “I would maybe have preferred to fight someone else, travel with that belt. But if we’ve got to do it again, we’ll do it again.”
Despite the rough start in the first fight, Dubois gave Wardley credit for making it a thriller. “It’s a fight, man,” he said. “You get in the shower you’re going to get wet.”
