Veteran trainer Don Charles, who once guided Derek Chisora and now trains IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois, has expressed reservations about a possible fight between his former and current charges. Speaking to Talk Sport, Charles voiced concerns for the 41-year-old Chisora, who aims to cap his career with a high-profile “50th and out” bout after defeating Otto Wallin in an IBF eliminator.
Chisora indicated interest in meeting Dubois for the IBF title, though Dubois himself has mentioned wanting to face Joseph Parker in July. Dubois had previously withdrawn from a proposed Parker fight due to illness. Oleksandr Usyk is another potential opponent, having shown interest in a rematch with Dubois, but there is still some discussion around a possible Chisora-Dubois showdown.
Charles, who worked with Chisora for the majority of his career, worries about a matchup that would see an aging “Del Boy” stand opposite the younger, heavy-hitting Dubois. He cited concerns about Chisora’s accumulated mileage in the ring and acknowledged his own emotional attachment to the heavyweight veteran. Although Charles said he would fulfill his professional duties if the fight were commissioned, he prefers not to stand in the opposite corner from Chisora.
Most fans agree that Chisora’s farewell outing should be an event that rewards his years of entertaining performances without exposing him to excessive risk. As of now, there is no official ruling on who Dubois will face next, nor have final details been confirmed for Chisora’s anticipated 50th bout.
