Oscar De La Hoya still believes he deserved the win over Floyd Mayweather in their 2007 super welterweight title fight, nearly two decades after Mayweather left the ring with a split decision victory.
De La Hoya won Olympic gold in 1992 and became a six-division world champion, but the Mayweather loss remains one of the results that still bothers him. Posting on social media, “The Golden Boy” claimed Mayweather’s unbeaten record does not tell the full story.
“You are 50-0 on paper, but people know that you’ve lost,” De La Hoya wrote. “Your own father said that you lost against me back when we fought.”
De La Hoya also brought up the rematch clause from their first fight, accusing Mayweather of avoiding a second meeting. “What’s crazy is that people don’t know we had a rematch clause for one year and what did you do? Your p&y a retires for one year and one day.”
Mayweather beat De La Hoya in May 2007 to win the WBC super welterweight title, but the split decision has remained a talking point. De La Hoya’s latest comments came as part of his push for Mayweather to put his professional record on the line in a possible rematch with Manny Pacquiao.
