Oscar De La Hoya, co-promoter of Jaime Munguia and former promoter of Canelo Alvarez, is setting his sights on a potential blockbuster fight between these two Mexican boxing stars. Following Munguia’s (43-0, 34 KOs) emphatic ninth-round stoppage victory over John Ryder (32-7, 18 KOs) in Phoenix, De La Hoya expressed his excitement about Munguia’s future and the prospect of him facing Canelo Alvarez.
De La Hoya predicts that Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will first face Jermall Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) on May 4, as part of his three-bout agreement with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions. He anticipates Alvarez, the undisputed super middleweight champion, will easily handle Charlo, paving the way for a September showdown with Munguia.
The Golden Boy Promotions founder highlighted the potential of an Alvarez-Munguia fight to captivate Mexican boxing fans, especially if it aligns with the celebration of Mexican Independence Day. De La Hoya drew parallels to historic all-Mexican showdowns like Erik Morales vs. Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez, emphasizing the significance of such a matchup in the current boxing landscape.
Despite acknowledging David Benavidez’s (28-0, 24 KOs) deserving chance at Alvarez’s IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO titles, De La Hoya is pushing for Munguia to secure the lucrative fight first. He also touched upon the business success of the Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia fight, suggesting that an Alvarez-Munguia bout could generate significant pay-per-view buys and ticket revenue.
De La Hoya’s comments indicate his belief in Munguia’s potential to challenge Canelo, despite Alvarez’s proven track record and dominance in the super middleweight division. As the boxing world awaits the official confirmation of Canelo's next opponent, the anticipation for a possible Alvarez-Munguia clash continues to build.
