Gervonta Davis appears to be moving toward a lightweight title defense against Floyd Schofield, with negotiations now underway after the WBA ordered the fight.
Davis has been inactive since his draw with Lamont Roach Jr., and the WBA recently named him lightweight champion in recess. There had been talk of a move to super lightweight for a rematch with Isaac Cruz, but with Cruz now looking elsewhere and the WBA ordering Davis to face Schofield, “Tank” may stay at 135lbs to protect his championship status.
Schofield’s father and trainer, Floyd Schofield Sr., says talks were already happening even before the WBA ruling. “Trust me, they are on that phone [to PBC] already,” he told FightHype. “They was already in preliminaries before the ruling came, they was negotiating.”
Schofield Sr. also said Davis has not rejected the fight. “Tank didn’t say that he didn’t want this fight,” he said. “Right now, they are in negotiations, I guess they are seeing if they can meet his demands.”
For Schofield’s side, the next step is simple. “We are waiting on the contract, that is all we waiting on,” Schofield Sr. said.
Davis’ return is expected around September, and Schofield now looks like the frontrunner to face him. At 23, the WBA No. 1 contender would be trying to hand Davis the first defeat of his career.
