Cuban fighter David Morrell says he’s ready to prove he belongs among the sport's elite when he takes on former 168-pound champion David Benavidez on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The 26-year-old Morrell sees the bout as a chance to silence skeptics and bring pride to his family and country.
"I want to show people I’m at this level," Morrell said. "Some say I’m not ready, but I plan to prove them wrong. I respect every fighter, but I see this as my opportunity to make a statement."
A newcomer at light heavyweight, Morrell impressed last August by outpointing Serbian contender Radivoje Kalajdzic over 12 rounds. Meanwhile, Benavidez moved up to 175 pounds after failing to lure Canelo Alvarez into a showdown at super middleweight. The 28-year-old from Phoenix dominated Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June, scoring a decision win to capture the WBC interim title.

Morrell, however, believes Benavidez’s success hinges on a one-dimensional style. "He’s a strong guy, but all he does is attack," Morrell said. "I never see any defensive moves. He’s big, but that’s it." Still, he expects a tough battle: "This fight won’t be easy, but I believe it ends in a knockout. I’m prepared to give everything to show I belong at the highest level."
