David Benavidez insists a long-discussed showdown with Canelo Alvarez is still achievable, even as a Terence Crawford rematch is now off the table. The American contender believes the shifting landscape at the top of boxing has reopened a door that once seemed permanently closed.

For years, Benavidez pushed for a fight with Canelo during the Mexican star’s dominant reign at super middleweight, only to be repeatedly overlooked. Frustrated by the lack of opportunity, Benavidez eventually vacated his position at 168 pounds and moved up in weight.

Since making the move, Benavidez has captured the WBC light heavyweight title and impressed in his most recent defense against Anthony Yarde. His rise has coincided with turbulence for Canelo, whose undisputed super middleweight reign ended with a decisive loss to Terence Crawford in September, leaving his next steps unclear.

Benavidez believes the leverage has now shifted. He has made clear he will not return to super middleweight, but says a fight could still happen if Canelo chooses to move up to 175 pounds. Benavidez also outlined ambitions to unify the division, suggesting that holding multiple titles would put him firmly in control of any future negotiations.
