Connor Mitchell is trying to create his own path in boxing, even with one of the sport’s most familiar surnames following him into the ring. The 21-year-old son of Kevin Mitchell is now 2-0 (1 KO) as a professional and returns on Saturday in Sheffield against Spanish journeyman Jesus Carrasco.
Mitchell admits his father’s career gave him both inspiration and pressure. He remembers being ringside as a child when Kevin Mitchell fought Jorge Linares, only to leave early because the anxiety was too much. Now, with age and experience, he understands the weight of the name better and wants to prove he belongs on his own terms. “I’m not just a son doing boxing because my dad’s gone big,” Mitchell said. “I won a senior ABA title as an amateur.”
The young southpaw also says he wants to learn from his father’s wars rather than copy them completely. “I think he was in too many wars,” Mitchell said. “I want to be a bit more smart.” He knows fans love fighters who can stand and trade, but he wants the right balance between fighting and boxing as he builds his career.
Conor Benn remains part of Mitchell’s support circle, despite leaving Matchroom for Zuffa Boxing. Mitchell says Benn still advises him and insists there is no bad blood toward his promoter. “He says to me all the time that he loves Matchroom,” Mitchell said. “That’s what he says.”
For now, Mitchell’s plan is patience. He wants to stay busy, face different styles, gain professional experience and then target titles in his third year. “Once you get chucked in, there’s no going back,” he said. “When I do step up, I’m ready.”
