Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, one of boxing's biggest stars, is set to headline his eighth Mexican Independence Day weekend fight on September 14th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. However, this year, Alvarez faces competition not just in the ring, but from a rival event across town – UFC 306, taking place at the new Sphere.

Alvarez, who prides himself on his drawing power and the tradition of fighting on this significant Mexican holiday, expressed confidence in his event's success, despite the UFC's move. "I didn’t do this fight [to compete with the UFC]," Alvarez said. "I don’t want to bother anybody. But I like to fight on my dates, in September. I have my fans. I’m glad and very thankful about that. I just do my job, and that’s it."

The competition between the two events has sparked controversy, particularly regarding venue reservations. UFC President Dana White criticized MGM officials for allowing Premier Boxing Champions to reserve the T-Mobile Arena before the UFC could secure The Sphere. Despite White's frustrations, the stage is set for a showdown both inside and outside the ring, with the UFC reportedly spending $20 million on production costs for their event, which is heavily backed by Saudi sponsorship.

Ticket pricing has also become a point of contention. Both promotions initially set high prices, leading to slower sales and subsequent price reductions. Upper-balcony tickets at The Sphere, for instance, have been cut from $1,250 to $850, while floor tickets dropped from $4,000 to $3,500. Meanwhile, PBC has also reduced prices for the Alvarez-Berlanga fight by 10 to 30 percent. As of Thursday, Alvarez’s event had fewer primary tickets remaining compared to the UFC event, but both are expected to draw large, passionate crowds.

Despite the rivalry, Alvarez remains focused on his fight against Edgar Berlanga, a young contender with a strong knockout record. The Mexican superstar is confident that the significance of the date and his loyal fanbase will ensure a successful event. "You know, competition is good. I take that as a challenge. I’m just going to do my best and take care of my people who support me," Alvarez said.

Las Vegas ticket dealer Ken Solky, who is selling tickets for both events, highlighted the unique appeal of each. "They both have a unique fan base, and you can be sure both rooms will be absolutely rocking Sept. 14," Solky said.
