Canelo Alvarez says he would welcome a rematch with Terence Crawford if the retired pound-for-pound great decides to return. Crawford walked away from boxing in December after beating Canelo to become the first three-division undisputed champion of the four-belt era, finishing his career unbeaten at 42-0.

Crawford has shown little interest in fighting again, especially at super middleweight, and has not pushed for a move down to middleweight to chase a sixth division title. Still, Canelo has not closed the door. “I don’t know [if he will return], I am not in his shoes,” Canelo said. “I hope that fight happens again and I get my rematch.”

The Mexican star believes the fight would still be huge for boxing fans, especially after Crawford’s historic win. “I think, it will be amazing for fans too, right? For everybody, it is a big fight,” Canelo said.

Now Canelo is moving on with his own plans and says he will not wait around for Crawford. “I am not going to wait for anybody. I have my plans already,” he said. His next step comes on September 12 in Saudi Arabia, where he faces Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title after 12 months out and elbow surgery.

If Canelo beats Mbilli, he has shown interest in facing other champions at 168lbs, though not Jaime Munguia, who now trains alongside him. Crawford, meanwhile, is expected to watch closely and has already said he wants to see how Canelo handles Mbilli.
