At a press briefing leading up to his bout against Jaime Munguia, Canelo Alvarez unequivocally closed the door on any speculation regarding a fight against David Benavidez. The reigning super middleweight champion, Alvarez, stressed that he has no interest in facing Benavidez, thus putting to rest any ongoing rumors about their potential face-off.
This isn’t the first time Alvarez has expressed reluctance to fight Benavidez; he’s consistently cited previous behaviors and remarks from Benavidez and his team as the reasons behind his decision. “That fight ain’t happening for him in this lifetime,” Canelo stated.

The situation was further complicated when Benavidez suggested he would agree to a rehydration clause, presumably to address Alvarez’s concerns about significant weight gain after weigh-ins. Yet, Alvarez dismissed the proposal, indicating that such strategies have become less relevant due to fighters’ capabilities to quickly regain weight following the official weigh-in.
For Canelo, choosing not to engage with Benavidez goes beyond just sidestepping potential post-fight complications; it’s a declaration of his autonomy in selecting his adversaries. “I’m going to do whatever I want,” said Canelo.
